3 Ways to Overcome Common Greenhouse Heating Challenges
Follow these steps for optimum energy efficiency in the greenhouse.
Energy is undoubtedly one of growers' biggest expenses. A whopping 65 to 85 percent of all energy consumed by greenhouse operations goes toward heating, according to a greenhouse energy conservation strategy bulletin produced by Michigan State University's Erik Runkle and Rutgers University's A.J. Both.
Wasted or lost heat, maintaining an ideal greenhouse temperature, and inefficiency in heating systems are three of the most common problems growers face when it comes to heating. Here's a look at some ways to overcome these challenges ...

Sustainability Pays Off
Reduced disease is a side benefit of Howard Prussack’s heating overhaul, which dramatically cut his energy costs.

Prussack's High Meadows was the first certified organic farm in Vermont. He invested in a new greenhouse that has an open roof and sides that open, hot-water heating, misting, and 28 rolling benches, each with two valves.
"We estimate the entire greenhouse plus heating system will pay for itself in 3 years," he says. "Even though we added a new greenhouse, we're still saving nearly $5,000 in energy costs."
