How To Reduce Your Runoff
Control stormwater runoff and improve water quality at your greenhouse operation with compost-filled Filtrexx® SiltSoxx®.
Every grower has a responsibility to environmental stewardship, especially when it comes to our most important natural resource: water. With recent changes in water quality restrictions in California, you can bet that changes will be forthcoming in your state.
To help, Delta T Solutions is pleased to offer a full line of stormwater runoff and erosion control products from Filtrexx International, including Filtrexx® SiltSoxx®. Essentially a compost-filled, mesh tube, SiltSoxx® can be placed perpendicular to runoff and is used to control erosion, retain sediment and adsorb pollutants in areas where sheet flow runoff is common, or in small drainage areas with concentrated levels.
Compost socks, compost blankets and compost berms were adopted as stormwater runoff and erosion control best management practices (BMPs) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2006. Qualitative studies have shown that compost socks are effective in removing as much or more sediment and pollutants from stormwater and runoff as traditional perimeter controls, such as a silt fence, while allowing a larger volume of clear water to pass through and promoting the establishment of vegetation. Compost socks improve water quality by retaining and adsorbing pollutants including heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, oil and grease, fuels, herbicides and pesticides. Nutrients and pollutants are decomposed by naturally occurring microorganisms within compost.
Commonly used for perimeter control on construction sites, slope stabilization and vegetation, steambank stabilization and restoration, storm drain inlet protection, storm water ditch checks and hydocarbon removal on highways, compost socks like SiltSoxx® are also used in green roof construction and rain garden and bioretention pond construction. They are often employed in conjunction with compost blankets and compost berms for best results.
